I recently took up sewing after poking at the topic for years. Two things inspire me to sew, making women’s clothes for tall women, making shirts that fit my broad chest without looking baggy, and making electronic clothes using conductive thread and some of the rather pleasantly designed fabric-friendly systems like the Lilypad and Flora and Fabrickit.
I have a Singer 4411 machine, no frills but sold as a ‘heavy duty’ machine. I have a lot of fabric to practice with, and a few patterns. I’m still working out how to make the seams look precisely the way I want them. After that, I’ll move on to actually making something someone might want to wear, but all the cheap clothes I’ve seen have really lousy seams.
